Welcome to our Year 5 class page!
Hello and such a warm welcome to Year 5. My name is Miss Britland and I will be teaching Year 5 this year working very closely with my wonderful colleague Mrs Taylor (HLTA). This year we are lucky to work alongside Coach Paul Gallagher (Rossendale Leisure Trust) who delivers PE and also Miss Lord (Lancashire Music Service) who delivers Music concentrating on brass instruments.
Our Spring Term
In Year 5, we are learning lots of new and exciting things – Light and Astronomy, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, Science-Fiction Stories and Poetry. We have also seen the launch of Britannia’s Reading Stars. Britannia Reading Stars is a challenge we are setting the children. The challenge is for the children to read for just 10 minutes as often as they can, every time a child reads and has their reading record signed by an adult, they receive a sticker. This sticker is then placed on their reading star in class and at the end of the half term, the children with the most stickers get their name placed into a hat with the chance of winning a brand new book from our school library. Let’s get reading and send our children into whole new worlds!
Our Astronomy Visit
On Wednesday 9th January, Year 5 were incredibly lucky to have two astronomers come in and talk to us about the different planets, their temperatures and size, the different star consolations, telescopes and how to look at the Sun safely.
We then used this WOW launch to complete our own observations of how the Earth’s rotation creates day and night.
Our PSHE Learning
This half term, we are learning all about finance and how we can spend money wisely and responsibly. The children have loved learning all the new terminology of finance, credit, debit, these are just to name a few… They have also had the pleasure of choosing their own jobs, learning how to spend their wage wisely on particular houses, cars, utilities and other bills to learn the value of money.
Dramatic Year 5!
We are super lucky this half term to have drama sessions delivered by a nearby high school teacher. Mrs McCullough from Fearns Community Sports College visits us every Wednesday to teach us drama techniques such as mime, improvisation, tone and volume of our speech and team building skills on how to work together to perform.
All the other formalities…
Homework is due in on a Friday and is set every half term. Children must complete all the red stars and one yellow star each week alongside comprehension which is set fortnightly. Bug Club is not compulsory but we still actively encourage children to read as often as they can.

Marvellous Me is an app (iPhone and Android) which we will be using in Year 5 daily. It will be used to notify you of the brilliant and hard work we are completing, reminders of up and coming events in school and letters which are given out at the end of the school day.
Mrs Taylor and I are really keen to know our children’s achievements, no matter what they are. If your child has any achievements at home, please do email me: firstname.lastname@example.org and we will celebrate this by placing it into our Year 5 WOW Book.
