Welcome to Reception!

Autumn 1

In Reception we have three members of staff.

Mrs Isherwood is the teacher and Mrs Bromley and Mrs Wright are the teaching assistants (TAs).

Here is what we look like!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Isherwood: katie.isherwood@britannia.lancs.sch.uk

In Reception we love to learn through playing and exploring. We are active learners and like to be 'hands on'! We do lots of reading, writing, maths, being creative and using our imaginations.

At Britannia CP School we follow the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme. Your child will begin their phonics lessons in their second/third week in school, after the Reception Baseline Assessment has been completed. We will share information with you about this at the time.

Read Write Inc. - Christ Church Hanham Primary School

In addition, at the beginning of your child's time in Reception, they may be sent home with picture books which do not contain words. The aim of these books is to focus on your child's imagination and vocabulary. You can be very influential with this, for example...

Child: "Biff has a cat. Chip has a gift."

Parent/Carer: "That's right! Biff has a small ginger cat with yellow eyes. Chip is holding a pink birthday present with a pretty bow."

It is vital that you read with your child at home at least 3 times a week. This greatly improves their vocabulary, imagination and later one their fluency. It aids them with their understanding of what they have read and gives them the skills to infer what may be happening and why. If you are experiencing any problems with reading at home please let me know as we have lots of ways which we can support you all.

(Please note: once your child starts to read books with words, they will receive Read, Write, Inc books. Your child will only use Biff, Chip and Kipper books if they are required for vocabulary and imagination.)

We work with the children to help them find strategies to develop their sense of wellbeing as well as discuss problems. We come up with solutions to how we can begin to try to solve our own problems.
